Napa’s Neighbor to the North: Continues to Elevate Wine

[Lake County, CA – September 2022] In the mountains north of Napa, an undiscovered wine country continues to garner high scores from major wine critics. Sol Rouge’s 2018 Petite Sirah was recently awarded 97 points in Wine Enthusiast, a new high score for Lake County wines and a sign of a rapidly developing wine region. Fifteen minutes north of Calistoga off Highway 29, is the Lake County’s wine country. Lake County wines have obtained 94 points or higher ratings by Wine Enthusiast 46 times in recent years.

Lake County is located about 2 hours north of San Francisco, right above the Napa Valley. The location doesn’t see as many visitors as the popular cities that surround it, and because of that, it is a hidden gem in the state. I had never been, so when the county invited us to visit, I jumped at the chance to explore a new part of California. What I found was small-town charm, the largest freshwater lake in California, wineries, and an awesome volcano you can hike, among other things. New resort, hotel, golf course projects poised to increase Lake County’s California tourism profile

Reeling after several wildfires over the past several years, Lake County is attracting several sizable resort and “glamping” projects, a potential boom, especially for the pandemic- struck restaurant and hospitality industries.

Lake County’s leisure and hospitality sector jobs were down 22% in October from a year before, to 930 from 1,200, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Lake County Wines Reach New a Pinnacle

KELSEYVILLE, Calif.Oct. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Lake County received the highest rating ever achieved by a wine from its region – receiving a 96 point rating for the 2016 Sol Rouge Petite Sirah from Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Lake County, a small wine growing region directly north of Napa, used to be part of Napa County and was said to have grown as many grapes as Napa in the 1900s. However, the 1920 Prohibition brought an end to Lake County wine production as vines were removed and planted with other crops.
